Acai bowls, poke bowls, detox smoothies, protein shakes and vegan meals.
You’ve probably noticed it, but Australia’s food habits are changing .. for the healthier. On a stroll through Sydney’s CBD at lunchtime its becoming more and more difficult to find an ‘unhealthy’ lunch.
In actual fact between 2012 and 2016 the number of vegetarians in Australia rose from 1.7 million people too 2.1 million[r1] people and it’s still growing quickly (Roy Morgan Research). In actual fact a lot of Australian’s are trying to swap the chips for a salad in their daily diet with an increase in consumption of greens.
In the last few years there has been an increased publication and understanding of food and how it makes us feel. We aren’t sure whether its the attraction of taking an Instagram photo with your healthy meal and hash-tagging #healthlife #fitness #foodies or a desire to feel healthier and more energetic. But in either case, 85.7 per cent of all Australians say they are currently trying to follow a healthy diet, according to a report published by Choosi,
Another emerging trend has been the rise in ‘eating on the go’. We are now choosing products that we can eat while looking at our mobile phones and walking to work. Whether it’s a muffin, health bar, smoothie or fruit there has been a 55% increase in the number of companies claiming that their product is in the ‘on the go’ category in the last 5 years.
So no, the rise in Acai bowls and detox smoothies hasn’t been in your imagination. Australian’s really are spending spending a combined $13.6 billion extra each year on ‘healthy eating’ trend.
